Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

General Facts :

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a small-sized rustic dog that has a harsh and wiry coat with shaggy eyebrows, mustache and beard. The dog has a double coat: the inner coat is for warming purposes and is soft. The rough single coat protects the PBGV when he is hunting in thick underbrush. The dog comes in white with markings in any of these colors: orange, tri-color, yellow, grizzle and black. The dog is approximately 50% longer than tall and the tail tapers are carried alert and high.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has large eyes, dark-colored that have an intelligent expression. The dog’s front legs are well-boned; the thighs are muscular and the back of the dog is level with a small arch over the loin. The PBGV is a friendly, merry dog and always eager to explore new things making him a very independent but also intelligent dog. The dog is famous for its digging abilities but also for his jumping qualities not to mention the fact that he can escape from any given environment that is why these dogs should be well-secured in order to prevent them from escaping.

Origin :

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has its origin in the Vendee area of France and in the year 1947 its characteristics were fixed by a French breeder named Abel Desamy. The PBGV is a small ( Petit ), low ( Basset ), wire-haired ( Griffon ), French ( from the region of Vendeen, in France ) used almost exclusively for hunting rabbit.

Dimensions :

Height : Between 13 and 15 inches ( approximately 34 to 38 centimeters )
Weight : Between 31 an 40 pounds ( approximately 14 to 18 kilos )

Additional Information :

These dogs can be trained easily although some PBGV owners affirm that this dog is hard to train. He is so intelligent that in some cases he makes his own schedule which in many cases isn’t the same with the schedule made by the owner. He is always eager to please the master so with proper training PBGV owners shouldn’t have any problems.

These dogs will do just fine living in an apartment if they are exercised sufficiently but they are inactive indoors that is why a medium-sized yard is recommended. The dog has a very powerful hunting instinct which in some cases can cause problems. Their life expectancy is around 14 years.
