Drever

General Facts :

The Drever has a long, large and well-proportioned head with clear eyes and close-fitting eyelids. The forelegs are parallel and vertical although the dog is quite short. In comparison with the Dachshund, the Drever’s legs are straight. The coat is thick and flat all over the dog’s body. The coat color can come in many variations: black, fawn or black/tan but always with white markings on the face, neck, feet, tail tip and chest. The dog carries its tail with a downward curve.

The Drever is known for the fact that he doesn’t get aggressive nor nervous, he is always calm but alert at all times. A tenacious and headstrong breed that usually wants to continue working a long time after its human companion has finished the hunting adventure for the day. The dog has a very fine nose, perfect for hunting deer. Due to the fact that it has short legs, his speed isn’t very impressive.

Origin :

The Drever was developed by crossing now-rare Weshpalian Dachsbracke and local hounds. The dog is popular in Sweden and finding one outside Sweden is quite rare. The Drever is the most popular hunting dog in the entire Sweden being used not only for deer hunt but for other types as well such as hare and fox. This breed was officially recognized in Canada in 1956.

Height : Between 11 and 16 inches ( approximately 28 to 40 centimeters )
Weight : Between 32 an 34 pounds ( approximately 14 to 16 kilos )

Additional Information :

These dogs can do very well in an apartment as they don’t need that much exercise in comparison with other hunting dogs. Although they don’t need a lot of exercise, these dogs are very active and have very big stamina resources. There are no health problems with this breed. Regarding their coat, it is easy to brush, shampooing should be done only when necessary.

This dog is known for being very courageous, as a matter of fact they can be quite efficient at hunting even large animals such as wild boars. The Drever has an incredible musical voice although looking at the dog’s size you would believe the opposite. A versatile dog, capable of adapting to the family life but also to hunting activities. Their life expectancy is around 13 years.
