English Springer Spaniel

General Facts :

The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized dog that has a docked tail and straight front legs with compact feet. The dog’s head is quite strong but not too heavy and it’s in good proportion with the rest of the body. The length of the dog’s head is just about the same as the length of the neck. The stop is somewhat moderate with a groove rising between the eyes and gradually disappears in the middle of the forehead. The coat is medium-sized and is either flat or wavy with the following color combinations: liver & white, black & white with/without tan markings or blue/liver roan.

The topline of the muzzle and skull have approximately parallel planes. The dog’s medium-sized eyes have a very kind and loving expression. Speaking of the dog’s eyes, they are either hazel or brown, depending on the coat’s color. The Springer’s ears are set in line with the eyes and when pulled forward, they should reach the top of the nose. The jaw is powerful and the teeth meet in a scissor bite.

Origin :

The English Springer Spaniel is the founder of all the English hunting spaniels and during the Renaissance period it was considered to be the ideal companion for the regular European hunter. The dog got its name from his method of flushing the game: he springs forward to drive birds out of hiding.

Height : Between 19 and 21 inches ( approximately 48 to 56 centimeters )
Weight : Between 45 an 55 pounds ( approximately 20 to 25 kilos )

Additional Information :

The English Springer Spaniel is a gently and friendly sociable dog that loves being around children. He is known to be a very intelligent and skillful dog with many other great qualities, such as: hunting, tracking, watchdogging, retrieving, willingness and obedience. These dogs enjoy staying in water but they shouldn’t be left alone for a long period of time because they can easily get into trouble and have the tendency to bark a lot.

They will enjoy living in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised but a medium-sized yard is recommended so that the dog will be truly happy. There are two types of Springers: field and bench. The field type is bred for its hunting and field trail abilities while the bench type is bred for conformation shows. Their life expectancy is around 13 years.
