Perdiguero de Burgos

General Facts :

The Perdiguero De Burgos is not as heavily built as it looks but it has muscular shoulders. The dog has a lot of skin which comes from being in a close relationship with the more famous Sabueso Espanol. The dog’s chest is deep and broad while the head is square-shaped with a moderately defined stop. The dog has a long muzzle that is very broad and square-shaped. The very long and wide ears hang down in folds and are rather soft and high-set.

The dog has hanging flews and a dewlap. Regarding its coat, it is dense and short and the coloring of it is always liver and white, which can either include or exclude ticking and patches. Most of these dogs have very heavy ticking that gives an almost grizzled look. The Perdiguero De Burgos isn’t recommended for apartment living as they aren’t very active indoors, they will do just fine in a medium-sized yard where they have space for running around.

Origin :

The Perdiguero De Burgos was developed in the Iberian Peninsula, just like the other European pointing breeds. This dog has been around at least since the 16th century and it is thought to be a descendant of the Old Spanish Pointer also known as the Perdiguero Navarro and the Sabueso Espanol, Spain’s scenthound breed. This breed nearly reached extinction in the beginning of the 20th century but nowadays it is being rediscovered by hunters.

Height : Between 20 and 25 inches ( approximately 52 to 64 centimeters )
Weight : Between 50 an 70 pounds ( approximately 23 to 32 kilos )

Additional Information :

The dog was used in the past for hunting deer but nowadays it is used for small and fast games such as the quail, hare and partridge. This dog is known to have a very good nose and won’t give up on a scent. Despite its appearance, the dog is fast and athletic and is capable of climbing over hilly and rough terrain. The Perdiguero De Burogs is a very obedient dog, easily trainable.

The dog has excellent swimming abilities and works very well in water. A very patient dog, always eager to please its master and very good with children but also with other pets. The dog’s coat is quite easy to groom and this should be done on a regular basis with a firm bristle brush. Bathing should be done only when necessary. Their life expectancy is around 13 years.
