Redbone Coonhound

General Facts :

The redbone coonhound is one of the most beautiful dogs in the world. It is quite strong and also a very robust coonhound. The ears are set moderately low, not stiff and also in proportion to the head. The eyes are set well apart and of pleading expression. The redbone’s neck is medium in length, quite strong and a little bit arched. The dog is slightly taller at shoulder in comparison to the hips.

This kind of dog has straight legs, very well boned and set. Its feet are the cat-paw type, compact and well-padded. It has strong toes which are arched. Regarding the body, it has a strong back and a bit arched. The length is proportioned to the height. It has plenty of lung space. Its skull is also proportioned with the body.

Origin :

It is an American breed which was developed in Georgia in the 19 th century from foxhounds and bloodhounds. The mixture of these two breeds resulted in a reliable hunting dog with a “foxhoundish” appearance. These dogs are used primarily for treeing raccoons but adaptability to other types of hunting such as big cat is available.

Height : Between 21 and 27 inches ( approximately 53 to 66 centimeters )
Weight : Between 50 and 70 pounds ( approximately 23 to 32 kilos )

These animals are born natural hunters so if not supervised they have the habit of running off and hunt if they aren’t kept in a suitable place. Also, due to the fact that they are born hunters, it is quite easy to train them to follow scent and also tree a quarry. Due to the fact that they have an all-weather coat they can live and sleep outdoors and also work in all sorts of environment.

These dogs are well-known to be very good water dogs. They are very good with people, especially with children. If they are raised indoors they will adapt very easily to the family life. The dog is alert and extremely quick, making him one of the best choices for hunting raccoons. Their life expectancy is about 11 to 12 years.
